Welcome to The Soma Room!

The paint is almost dry, the books are arranged neatly on the shelves and The Soma Room is now finally ready for business!

My name is Sophie, and I'm a massage therapist and board certified Structural Integrator. I've lived in London for eight years, and have been working as a massage therapist in one form or another pretty much since I arrived. I adore studying and learning new modalities and ways of working - most of the money I earn goes on courses. In fact, if I'd saved the money I've spent on courses over the years, I'd probably have enough for a deposit on a house! I'm sure there must be a support group out there for me somewhere...

Although I've spent the past few years working for other massage companies, the fates have finally aligned and provided me with a little treatment room to call my own. This is both an exciting and oddly scary prospect, but I'm very much looking forwards to the challenge of running my own little practice, and hopefully making it the number one bodywork clinic for Walthamstow and beyond.

Why the 'The Soma Room'? Wikipedia can be of some help here:

"The term is derived from the word "Somatic" (Greek "somatikos", soma: “living, aware, bodily person”) which means, pertaining to the body, experienced and regulated from within. The concept of soma posits that neither body nor mind is separate from the other; both are part of a living process."

So one of the key principles of The Soma Room is to always be mindful of the "body, experienced and regulated from within" - in other words, to treat you like the complex and and wonderful human being you are, rather than a person-shaped bag of muscles and bones lying on my treatment table. If you've ever had a massage in which the therapist seems a million miles away, or if it feels like you're getting the exact same massage as everyone else before you, you will know what an important difference this makes!

My hope for this blog is not just to keep you up to date with the latest news and updates from the Room, but to also eventually be a source of impartial information on everything related to body, mind, massage and more. Watch this space!
